Iraq – Conflict and humanitarian situation (ECHO)
- The European Commission will increase its humanitarian
assistance to Iraq by €5 million following the displacement of hundreds
of thousands of people as a result of the recent attacks perpetrated by
the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other armed groups.
This additional funding will bring the total 2014 humanitarian funding
for Iraq to €12 million.
- The full scale of the humanitarian disaster is as yet unclear,
as many displaced families are currently being hosted by relatives and
communities of origin. The number of displaced people is expected to
rise due to the severity of the fighting.
- ECHO has been preparing its response to new waves of
displacement and this additional funding is a further step in that
process.
Pakistan - Complex emergency (ECHO, UN)
- Curfew has gradually been lifted in
some sub-divisions of North Waziristan. Latest estimates indicate that
currently 101 586 IDPs have been displaced from North Waziristan Agency
to Bannu, DI Khan and Tank as of 18 June, 2014, with further
displacements to take place over the next days. The Ministry of State
and Frontier Region estimates up to 300 000 people to be displaced due
to military operations. The current figures of displacement still
cannot be independently verified due to access constraints and the
limited number of humanitarian organisations presence in the areas of
displacement. To date no international support has been requested by the
Pakistan authorities.
- According to UN agencies, 928
families who have crossed from Pakistan into Afghanistan, of which 818
families are Pakistani and 110 families are undocumented Afghans. An
assessment is ongoing. In addition, a three-day joint mission to Khost
is scheduled from 19-21 June. The purpose of the mission is to
triangulate the population figures, and also gain a more robust view of
the humanitarian needs. The mission is being facilitated by UNHCR.
Central America & Mexico – Organized violence as a reason
for increased displacement of children from Central America and Mexico,
to the United State of America (ECHO)
-
More than 47 000 unaccompanied minors, mostly from Central America,
crossed into the United States between October 2013 and May 2014. They
were fleeing from organized violence and poverty in Central America and
Mexico. The situation of these children is worrying and reflect only one
of the numerous humanitarian consequences caused by organized violence
in the Mesoamerican region.
- High level discussions are
currently taking place on possible options for these children. But one
main line is emerging, recognizing the fact that a vast proportion of
children are fleeing from organized violence and that they should be
considered as victims requiring adapted protection mechanisms.
- UNHCR estimates that 58 percent of
the unaccompanied children arriving to the United States would have a
viable claim to a refugee protection status as per international law.
- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is
visiting Guatemala on 20 June to meet Central American leaders
(presidents of Guatemala and El Salvador and General Minister of
Honduras) about the influx of unaccompanied minors to the United States
of America and to discuss possible solutions.
West Africa - Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak (ECHO)

Redemption Hospital in Monrovia where a nurse died after being
contaminated by Ebola virus.
- At least four cases have been confirmed in the
New-Kru town quarter of Monrovia and 93 contacts are being followed up: 44
health workers and 49 communities members. It is believed that the initial case
in Monrovia arrived from the Sierra Leone border area.
- Today,
20 June, the Mano River Union (Liberia, Sierra Leone and
Liberia) Ministers of Health will hold an EBOLA response coordination meeting
in Conakry.
